Element: Choose appropriate materials
  • Analyse timber types and characteristics to identify appropriate timber for the barrel
  • Analyse metal types and characteristics to identify appropriate metal for the barrel
       
Element: Determine the impact of barrel components and storage processes on contents
  • Identify effects of barrel fermentation, maturation and seasoning and controlled oxidisation on barrel and barrel contents.
  • Apply knowledge of barrel storage processes to barrel production

  • Verify and comply with work health and safety (WHS) legislative and organisational requirements
  • Review, confirm and clarify work order with appropriate personnel
  • Plan barrel production sequence

  • Collect materials, hardware, fittings and attachments
  • Select fixing and joining devices in accordance with work instructions and type of materials to be joined
  • Select jigs, and check they are suitable for purpose
  • Machine and prepare components, including staves and heads, to specification
  • Lay out and join components using jigs and appropriate fastenings and clamping devices
  • Use hand and power tools and equipment as required
  • Check assembled components for compliance with specifications
  • Line barrel according to specification
  • Test barrel for leakage and repair faults
  • Fit and secure decorative features or fittings to specification
  • Sand and prepare barrel for coating
  • Coat barrel in accordance with specification and intended commercial application

  • Tag and report faulty and defective equipment in accordance with workplace procedures
  • Organise and store finished barrels in holding area
  • Remove waste and scrap following workplace procedures
  • Clean tools and equipment, check they are in serviceable condition, and store them in accordance with workplace procedures
  • Clean equipment and work area in accordance with workplace procedures
  • Complete records and reports to workplace requirements

Assessment Tasks

Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed.
